The Nursing Mom's Survival Guideand contributions from The Labor of Love's Nursing Mom's There are many people who will try and discourage you ... and one of the MAIN people? That little person in the mirror. The best advice I could ever give you would be to read as much as you can ... prepare not only yourself - but the people CLOSEST to you, building a SUPPORT base. Remember that it is a skill that is learned, NOT something every woman SHOULD know...but something every woman can LEARN. And if you decide it's not right for you ? DON'T beat yourself up!
A Mom who had difficulties and wants to try again,
Or a Mom who's done it, and is nervous about trying again,
You can do it!
As a first time Mom I can definitely attest to the fact that it's learning as you go! And even then, I made a lot of mistakes. I just want everyone to feel as comfortable as they can with the knowledge that - not ALL of us get it right the first time ... or even the second time.... . And no one is immune to making a mistake - or learning something new
In addition to a series of wonderful articles by Dr. Jack Newman, the Labor of Love also offers another brand of expert - You!
Before your baby arrives I would strongly suggest reading as much as you can on the subject of breastfeeding. Contact you local La Leche League, and see if you can connect with a lactation consultant, who will be INSTRUMENTAL later on in getting you over the rough patches. Surf the web, find a parenting website such as The Labor of Love, where you can communicate with other nursing Mom's, and just begin to surround yourself with as many positives concerning breastfeeding as you can.
I'm not a health professional, nor a lactation consultant. I'm just a Mom who started out interested in the health and well being of her own unborn child, and decided to breastfeed - and came upon a WONDERFUL wealth of information - and people. And still, there were so many women who didn't know anything at all.
Breastfeeding Mom's go through so many changes, and at times, I know at times in the beginning, I felt like giving up. Speaking for myself of course, there were times in the beginning, after dealing with cracked sore nipples (which Lansinoh quickly healed), dealing with Thrush (ouch!), and just being plain ol' exhausted, that I really wanted to throw up my hands and say - THAT'S IT!
Educating yourself is the key to a healthy breastfeeding relationship with your baby. The following are what the Labor of Love nursing mom is talking about:
